Hello from Garden Snake Farm!
Here's our attempt at a weekly newsletter where you'll find this week's fresh list, farm happenings and recipes we're digging with our current crop!
To be honest it's hard to believe we're here... 2 months ago our seed house still sat in the box it was delivered in and we had just started hauling in compost to build our rows. Not a single thing was seeded. In the days between then and now, we erected a seed house, hauled in 19 tons of compost (and moved it all by hand), built 36 x 100ft rows, dug a trench for a water line, set up electrical, seeded most everything indoors and direct, built a cold storage room and mobile washing station. We also started fulfilling our end of our work trade agreement with the land owners, which includes weed management in surrounding horse pastures and helping care for the small flock of sheep.
We nursed our seedlings through 2 cold snaps, hail and a bout of beetles. We'd be lying if things didn't look a little grim a couple of weeks ago. Farming is no joke and sometimes our 1/2 acre is more than we know what to do with, but it's teaching us patience, resilience and respect for the land we're tending to.
Thanks for trusting us to grow for you, we'll see you so soon!
